We started the first morning in Portland with a .5 miles walk to breakfast: Nong’s Khao Man Gai.
If you’ve seen Chef Nong compete on the show Chopped, you might have heard of this restaurant. There are a couple locations in Portland, one of them being a food cart in downtown Portland. The location near our stay was a small cozy spot with seatings perfect for people watching. Thai music played in the background. It felt like stepping into a restaurant in Thailand.
We ordered #1: Khao Man Gai (chicken and rice), #5: Chicken and Rice with house made peanut sauce with a side of chicken liver. Everything was very tasty. The chicken was juicy and natural tasting, not too salty and not overly seasoned. Their homemade sauce complimented the meal very well. We ordered a Chang and a Singha beer to go with the meal because every vacation meal has to be complete, with an ice cold beer.
This whole meal just brought me back to Bangkok. The foods were simple and authentic. It didn’t feel Americanized. Being able to eat a whole Thai meal in a beautifully decorated Thai environment in Portland just made the start of my Day 1 in Portland much more special. I definitely recommend a visit to any of Nong’s Khao Man Gai’s location in Portland.
